Hi guys, so I hope you have had a good week. I don’t know that if any of you are aware of a petition I have recently set up to try and get me to the brit awards. That petition is still up now, it would be great if you signed it; https://www.change.org/p/mastercard-get-me-to-the-brit
So on a rather related note, you can probably already tell by the title of this post I am going to telling you all that I think about this year’s brit nominations. I really liked the way they announced the nominations which were by having a live show on ITV last Saturday with a few performers. It was nice to me because for the last 5 or 6 years I am always excited for the brit noms to be announced so for it to have its own programme added a little extra excitement for me.
So I am just going to go through each award and speak about their choices and who I would have had in there etc. let’s get started…
British Artist video;
Adele – ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’
Calvin Harris Feat. Rihanna – ‘This Is What You Came For’
Clean Bandit Feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – ‘Rockabye’
Coldplay – ‘Hymn For The Weekend’
James Arthur – ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’
Jonas Blue Feat. Dakota – ‘Fast Car’
Little Mix Feat. Sean Paul – ‘Hair’
One Direction – ‘History’
Tinie Tempah Feat. Zara Larsson – ‘Girls Like’
Zayn – ‘Pillowtalk’
I feel the nominees for this awards are sort of hit or miss, to be honest. I feel a couple of these videos were placed purely to pull big fan bases in and to create this sort of built up sense of rivalry. Let me expand on that, so this award is fan voted which means the people at the brits will most probably already know who has got the best chance of winning. For example last year one direction were up for this award against Ed Sheeran and a couple of other artists, one direction won by so much purely because their fans don’t really care about much but awards and numbers etc this was proven when the drag me down video came out and they were just trying to break Vevo records and stuff like to them the quality of the content is irrelevant . Anyway, before I go on a why I hate one direction tangent lets go onto my other point which Is the setup rivalry. Obviously, zayn left one direction which is why they have put him up against them, then he broke up with Perrie from Little mix which is why they are there. To me that all seems a bit convenient and I don’t really see why one direction are here because that video came out ages ago anyway. Just generally for this line up of videos I don’t think many are that well made. I am really passionate about music videos and I feel a lot of these are lacking in actual meaning and purpose, let’s be honest one of the 1975’s videos should be up for this. They way their videos are made and the small details make them so pleasing to watch.
British Breakthrough act;
I am so pleased for 3 out of the 5 acts up for this award. Anne-Marie strikes me as such a lovely down to earth person and that likability with her amazing vocal talents make her such a true artist. Blossoms are a huge part of the music I am listening to at the moment as I was over the moon wen they read their names out as I just feel indie and alt music can be excluded from mainstream award shows so it was nice to see them up for it. Rag ‘N’ Bone Man is another one of my favourite artist at the moment and I was so happy for him last night when I watched him pick up the critics choice award, the genuine passion that he has for what he does it really admirable. Well here is where I have to switch over to a negative note and that is the grime artists. What they do isn’t real and lacks in well just about everything. I understand that the brits want to really show off this country’s musical talents and with grime being a predominantly British genre that is obviously why they are doing it. I on the other hand am not proud of grime music, in fact, I am ashamed of it when I find out someone listens to grime music Ido lose a bit of respect for them because there is nothing about it I can understand anyone liking. Believe it or not, my last post where I wrote about grime did really really well so shout out to the haters for viewing it you have done me a huge favour.
British Female solo artist;
Lianne La Havas
So I have, to be honest here I have only heard of two of these artist with them being ‘Emily Sande’ and ‘Ellie Goulding’. I don’t listen to any female solo artists, I’m not sure why that is but they never really stand out to me. However, I didn’t think that Ellie did a lot in this past year so not really sure how she qualified. Emeli released a new album not that long back now and a couple of solid singles from that. I can’t really comment for the other 3 as I haven’t heard much from them.
British Male solo artist;
I think my opinion of two of these acts have already been shown in this post so I’m not going to comment on them two. However, I think they have done a good job with Craig, Michael and David. I’m really not a fan of Craig David but that doesn’t deny him of his success, He has had a really successful comeback and I bet It feels amazing for him to be up for another brit. David Bowie I feel is another rightful nomination for this award, his album Blackstar was not only extremely moving and powerful but also was so successful. It was the best-selling vinyl album of 2016 which is an amazing achievement. Michael released, in my opinion, one of the best albums of 2016 with ‘love and hate’. He also comes across and a really nice person.
I’m super happy with these nominees. It makes a nice change to not see one direction in this list. I listen to all but one of these bands on the regular and of course , I’m a huge The 1975 fan(Catch my the 1975 concert experience post here; The 1975 o2 arena. ). A Little mix for me seem a little bit out of place in this lineup as they are more pop-fueled but nevertheless I feel this is going to be a really close one.
Mastercard album of the year;
The 1975 – i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it
Davie Bowie – Blackstar
Kano – Made In The Manor
Michael Kiwanuka – Love & Hate
Skepta – Konnichiwa
I feel that these nominations are mostly really good. Blackstar was obviously really a moving album that a lot of people loved. Love and hate was an amazing debut album that displays amazing skills and talent. I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it was obviously my favourite album of last year so I really feel the boys deserve this one due to the messages in the songs and the diversity of genres.
International male solo artist;
I’m not going to go into these international awards too much as the main focus are the brits at these awards but I really like all of these artists but of course, I am drawn to The weeknd and I am so glad he is up for this award again.
Best international group.
A Tribe Called Quest
Drake & Future
Kings of Leon
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
I only listen to twenty-one pilots out of this list so I can’t really have a say.However, I am surprised that Fifth harmony and one republic aren’t here.
Best international female;
Christine and the Queens
I feel this was all very predictable. I have listened to all of these artists over the past year and they all deserve to be here. If I had to choose my favourite I would have to say Beyonce purely because Lemonade was one of my favourite albums of last year. I feel this is going to be really tough for the people to choose a winner as they all did amazing things in the last year.
I hope you enjoyed finding out what I think about this year’s brit nominations, overall I think they did a good job. I am super excited for the awards now on the 22nd of February.
See you in my next post, bye…
